The photographs in this series were made in one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. It is also the location of some of the world’s poorest people. Mountain farmers must tend the fragile mountain soil with care. If not, the land will become useless and the great beauty of the place will be lost. I have learned, by making these pictures, that the urbane are blind to many aspects of our humanity and to the richness of our natural environment. And, I have come to believe that this ignorance is powerfully destructive.
In order to document these beautiful places I have received helpful guidance from Peter Shear of CASA Interamericana, and financial support from the University of Massachusetts.
